"Laws" Earns Medalist Honors in TPC Qualifying

Chattanooga TPC Sponsors

Co-medalist Ronnie Law

"I thought I might have him [son Kevin] today, I don’t get that opportunity very often."

Scores were generally high in stroke-play qualifying for the Chattanooga TPC at Council Fire on Saturday. So after Ronnie Law turned in an even-par 72 with just nine players still on the golf course, he had every reason to think that might stand up as the low score of the day.

It wasn’t to be. When the next group came in, another player had also toured the difficult course in 72. It was none other than Law’s son, Kevin.

"I thought I might have him today," the elder Law said after he was told what his son shot. "I don’t get that opportunity very often."

The Laws’ scores were shot in remarkably similar fashion. Both had four birdies and four bogeys. Both birdied two straight holes on the front nine, only to follow them with bogeys. And both birdied the par-3 12th and the par-5 18th.

"I guess that five-footer I had to make [on the 18th] tied him," said Kevin Law, just a couple of years removed from competing for the University of Tennessee.

The final-hole birdies allowed the Laws to be the only players in the field to match par. Only two players, Richard Keene and Matt Mathis, shot 74 on a day when wet and windy conditions made the course difficult. Three-time TPC champion Pat Corey shot an 81, and there were seven other scores in the 80s.

Ronnie Law began the day with no expectations. "I was hitting the ball so doggone bad on the driving range," he said. Law’s confidence wasn’t aided by his tee shot at No. 1, which he pushed to the right. Law eventually regrouped, and though he bogeyed both front-nine par 3s, he hung in until the tough 8th and 9th holes. Law birdied both with putts of about 10 feet.

That really turned things around for me and got me going," Law said.

Law proceeded to bogey No. 10, but parred the par-5 11th and then birdied the par-3 12th. Law was fairly steady from that point, offsetting a bogey at No. 16 with a birdie at the par-5 18th.

"It seems like every time I needed to hit a good shot, I was able to do that," Law said.

Kevin Law started strong with birdies at No. 2 and No. 3, but bogeyed the par-3 fourth after hitting his tee shot right. He also bogeyed the par-5 sixth hole after hitting his 9-iron approach over the green.

Law hit his stride on the back nine. After parring 10 and 11 and making a birdie at No. 12, he coasted home, making only one bogey at the par-3 14 and erasing that with a birdie at No. 18.

Law reached the Green in two for his birdie, while his father did things the old-fashioned way. Ronnie Law laid up to about 98 yards, and was able to hit his gap wedge to within eight feet.

Kevin Law saved his round with a couple of pressure par saves. He drove his tee shot into the water and the par-5 13th, but knocked a sand wedge to about 10 feet for his fourth shot. He drained the putt for a clutch par.

On the front nine, Law salvaged par on the par-4 5th hole when he hit a flop shot to within tap-in range.

By virtue of having earned more TPC stars through this year's various events, Kevin Law claimed the tournament’s No. 1 seed for match play, which begins Sunday. He’ll play Clint Wolford in the opening round. Ronnie Law, meanwhile, will play 15th seeded Matt Brock.
