Former Champions Corey, Ledford Advance To TPC Quarterfinals

Chattanooga TPC Sponsors

Former champions won two matches and lost two matches in the 2005 Chattanooga TPC round of 16 on Friday afternoon at the Council Fire Golf Club.

Advancing to Saturday’s match play quarterfinals were Pat Corey and Bryce Ledford. Falling out of match play, however, were Tom Schreiner and Chris Treadway. Corey won the TPC championship in 1993, ’95 and ’96 and Ledford was last season’s winner. Schreiner took the title in 2003 and Treadway earned championships in 1998 and ’99.

Corey defeated John Lambert, 2 and 1, while Ledford beat Josh Coley, 2 and 1. Thomas Smith beat Schreiner, 3 and 2, and Jay Goza topped Treadway, 3 and 2.

The quarterfinals will begin on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. The semifinal round will start Sunday morning at 8, with the championship scheduled for just after noon.

PAT COREY 2 AND 1 OVER JOHN LAMBERT: “I’ll have to play a lot better than this if I plan on advancing again,’’ Corey said.

Corey was 2 up at the turn, and pushed it to 3 up with a birdie on No. 14.

“I started hitting it a little better on the backside,’’ Corey said. “I’m struggling with my swing, just don’t trust it. Finally, on the back I had to trust it. It was a lot of fun, a great time playing with John.’’

THOMAS SMITH 3 AND 2 OVER TOM SCHREINER: UTC’s Smith held on for his victory over Schreiner.

“Thomas just really played well,’’ Schreiner said. “He earned it.’’

JAY GOZA 3 AND 2 OVER CHRIS TREADWAY: Goza said the turning point came on No. 8 when Treadway’s ball got stuck in a mound by the green. He got a ruling, but didn’t like it. Goza won the hole to go 1 up.

“Chris was mad for several holes,’’ Goza said. “He was playing OK, but got mad about the ruling. I’ve never seen a ball get stuck in a mound and a player not be able to spot it.’’

Goza went 3 up with a par on No. 15, then took the match when both players got pars on No. 16.

“I’ve worked midnight shift the last two days, and I got a little tired today,’’ Goza said. “But I’m off for the weekend, so we’ll see.’’

BRYCE LEDFORD 2 AND 1 OVER JOSH COLEY: Defending champion Ledford was 4 up at the turn, but lost Nos. 10, 12, 13 and 15 as Coley tied the match.

“He was making some good putts, and I made a couple of bad shots,’’ Ledford said. “I’m just not hitting the ball good, but I’ll figure it out.’’

Ledford won No. 16 with a par, the closed out the match with a par on No. 17.

MATT MATHIS 2 AND 1 OVER RANDY YODER: “It was a great match,’’ Mathis said. “We swapped a lot of birdies. We were both 2-under at the turn and were both 3- or 4-under after 13.’’

Mathis went 1 up with a birdie on No. 13 and 2 up with a par on No. 14. Both players had pars on No. 17.

“I played so much better today,’’ Mathis said. “Randy said I was poor-mouthing yesterday, but I wasn’t.’’

GREG PRIVETTE 1 UP OVER PETE WEBSTER: “I was 4-down standing on the No. 13 tee,’’ Privette said. “I was lucky to win.

“That’s the best comeback I’ve ever had in match play. It’s tough to come back from 4-down. Pete played really well today. He was solid. I just stayed patient.’’

After getting back to even, Privette won the match with a birdie on No. 18. He hit a driver and 3-iron, then hit a lob wedge to 3-feet and made the winning putt.

CHASE DECK 2 UP OVER MIKE JENKINS: In one of the best matches of the day, Deck had to win the last two holes to beat Jenkins.

“That was a nail-biter,’’ Deck said. “He played solid golf for 16 holes.’’

Said Jenkins, “I played OK, but the last two holes were disappointing.’’

Deck and Jenkins were even through No. 16. Deck won that hole with a par and then won No. 18 when Jenkins conceded after hitting his drive out-of-bounds.

“I’ve got to strike it better,’’ Deck said. “My iron play has to improve.’’

TYSON ELLIOTT 5 AND 4 OVER TOM BAIRD: Elliott raced to a 5-up lead after 12 holes. Baird conceded a short par putt for the match on No. 14.

“It was a little combination of me playing well and Mr. Baird not playing well,’’ Elliott said. “He’s a great player. He was just off his game today.’’

Elliott made birdies on Nos. 2, 11 and 12.

“My game is good right now and I’m putting well,’’ he said. “The putting is really saving me.’’
